Whitehall and Westminster is the area of London where the political and administrative centre of England as well as the United Kingdom is located. For close to a thousand years, the country has been ruled from here, beginning with King Canute at the start of the 11th century.

The area that we know know today as Whitehall and Westminster was an island near the meeting point between the River Thames and its tributary, the Tyburn. Canute built his palace here beside a church which 50 years later, was enlarged by Edward the Confessor, and would become what we know today as the Westminster Abbey.

Over the centuries the various government offices began to occupy the areas surrounding the palace and the abbey. The main road through these offices was named Whitehall, after the palace which once stood there. It leads north towards Trafalgar Square, where the entertainment district of London starts.
