Royal Courts of Justice, commonly called the Law Courts, is a beautiful castle-like building that houses the Court of Appeal of England and Wales, and the High Court of Justice of England and Wales. It is located on The Strand, in the City of Westminster, near the border with the City of London.

The designing of the Royal Courts of Justice building had eleven architects competing for the contract. Eventually the contract was won in 1868 by George Edmund Street, a lawyer turned architect, and construction began in the 1870's. During construction, a worker's strike by the stonemasons threatened to delay the project. Foreign workers, mostly Germans, were hired to take over. This caused much hostility between the Gastarbeiter and the strikers, necessitating that the German workers had to be housed and fed separately. The Royal Courts of Justice building was eventually opened by Queen Victoria in December, 1882.
