Greater London is an administrative subdivision of London. Established in 1965, Greater London comprises thirty-two districts called boroughs, plus the City of London. The 32 boroughs cover an area of 1579 sq km (609 sq mi) and has a population of about 7,600,000 (2010 estimate).
The City of London is a unique entity within Greater London, but is not a borough of Greater London. Also called the Square Mile, it is in fact 1.12 sq miles (2.9 sq km) in area, and is further subdivided into 25 wards, and a population of just 11,500. The City of London serves as the financial district of London.
Apart from the City of London, within Greater London itself the City of Westminster is the only borough holding a city status. It is where the Government of the United Kingdom is located, with important sights such as the Palace of Westminster and Buckingham Palace.
Of the 31 remaining boroughs of Greater London, two are termed "Royal Boroughs". They are the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The Queen has also bestowed on the London Borough of Greenwich the title of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. This is only to take effect in 2012, when she celebrates her Diamond Jubilee.
The following are all the boroughs that form Greater London:
1 Borough in Inner London
2 Borough with Royal status
3 Greenwich to be titled a Royal Borough during the Diamond Jubilee in 2012
4 The City of London is located within Greater London but is not regarded as a borough of Greater London.
