It is served by the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line between Finchley Central Tube Station (heading towards Mill Hill East or High Barnet) and Highgate Tube Station (heading towards Morden or Kennington).
The East Finchley Tube Station first operated in 1867 for the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway. It was originally called the East End Station. It was renamed to its present name in 1886.
Underground trains began serving the station in 1939. At that time, the Northern Line was undergoing electrification. The original station was rebuilt in the Art Deco style for the new train services, and the electrified Northern Line began serving the East Finchley Tube Station in 1940.
