As with the rest of the station on the Fairlop Loop, Chigwell Tube Station first opened in 1903 for the Great Eastern Railway. It was first served by the electrified Central Line in 1948, after over a decade of delay due to the outbreak of the Second World War.
The Chigwell Tube Station is located on High Road in Chigwell. The station is a brick building with an interested pair of gables or pediments over the first-floor windows. The railway tracks run under High Road, which is on an overpass.
