During the planning of the London Olympic Games, it was reported in 2008 that basketball could be played at Wembley Area, and that the Basketball Arena does not have to be built at all. Doing that will save as much as £90 million. Nevertheless, in March 2009, construction of the new arena was confirmed, and the area was completed in June, 2011. It will not be a permanent feature of the London Olympic Park. After the Games, the arena will be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
